Join the Historic Designation Committee and keep your neighbors in the loop!

​After March’s CPNO vote, the Historic Designation Committee is gearing up for its next stage: A 10–14 month inclusive process to engage Candler Park residents and work with a consultant to define and draft proposed regulations for a potential Candler Park Historic District.

Most of you probably want to know when we’re going to get started! 
 
The Committee will serve as the project management team for Phase 2 of the historic designation initiative, the end goal of which is to define a potential Candler Park Historic District with regulations that the neighborhood can vote on whether or not to submit to the City.
 
The Committee’s tasks will include publicizing and organizing meetings, continuing to educate ourselves and the neighborhood as we draft potential regulations, and ongoing fundraising to make sure the process is done as well as possible. Emily Taff will Chair the Committee, giving Mary Shaltis a much-deserved break, and the committee will take on new members. 
 
All neighbors can have a voice as we work on drafting regulations through Community Engagement workshops and meetings designed for public input, review, and discussion. However, if you have time to dedicate to the task of engaging the neighborhood in the process, please consider joining the Historic Designation Committee! 
 
We have outlined some specific tasks of the working Committee as “subcommittees” below to share the work that’s needed to engage the neighborhood in this process, and encourage those of you with these skills to join the team!
 
Communications and Outreach: These roles are among the most important in providing updates and insight to neighbors. Tasks include brainstorming, writing and editing communications, posting content and updating the website. 
 
Secretary: Someone who can be responsible for taking meeting notes.
 
General Volunteers: People the committee can call on periodically to help with “legwork” like distributing communications, help at in-person events, or for other tasks.
 
Fundraising and Finance: Are you skilled at raising money? Diligent at tracking spending and a whiz with a spreadsheet? Please raise your hand for this subcommittee. Fundraising is important to make sure the process is done well!
 
Regulations and Education: These members will research and focus on developing an in-depth understanding of the historic designation process and regulations to answer questions that come up. They will work with the consultant to transform working session feedback into potential regulations. If you’re knowledgeable about zoning codes and/or historic districts or designation processes, this may be a good place to volunteer. 
 
THE PROCESS
While the team is currently working on a schedule, generally there will be at least 7 public engagement meetings over the next 10-14 months which follow a similar process to that of drafting a neighborhood master plan. We will start with Community meetings focussed on deep dives into regulatory topics related to historic districts and then we’ll get into workshopping draft regulations for a potential Candler Park district. Meeting notes and drafts of any documents generated will be posted after every meeting, both committee meetings and public engagement meetings/workshops, so that if you miss something you can still stay in the loop. This process will allow Candler Park to have a thoughtful in-depth discussion about how this neighborhood would like to handle future growth.
